Zhang Fei Ancient Road: check access before you choose a route.

This Beibei riverside trail follows Wentang Gorge on the Jialing River. The most important planning detail in the reviewed material is which entrance is open, because the Datokou–Zhangfeiquan section was under construction in the 7 October 2026 snapshot.

Choose the route that matches today's access

  1. Short out-and-back (when the ancient-road section is usable): Datokou entrance → Jinxia Terrace viewpoint → Zhangfeiquan wild hot spring → Zhangfei Pool → waterfall → Baiyangbei old street, then return.
  2. Opposite-bank grand loop (listed as open during the Datokou closure): Jingangbei village → Xunjiang riverside boardwalk → Wenquan Temple → Xinbeiwenquan Park → Chengjiang old street → CNY 2 ferry across the Jialing → Baiyangbei / Changshengtan.
  3. Confirm ferry timing: the source says hourly departures and about 29 passengers per boat.
  4. Eat before you start — the source notes few restaurants near the trailhead and limited resupply on the way.

What the walk is known for

Highlights described in the reviewed material include the carved “Zhang Fei Ancient Road” entrance boulder, mossy stone steps beside the gorge, the Jinxia Terrace viewpoint, free Zhangfeiquan wild hot spring pools (about 30°C year-round in cited reporting), the CNY 2 Chengjiang ferry, Wenquan Temple, and the historic lanes of Jingangbei.

Nicknames such as “Chongqing's ancient Shu Road” or “little Erhai” are vlogger impressions, not official designations.

Practical cautions from the source

Bring insect repellent and non-slip shoes. Some riverside stretches have no railings; take care on wet days and near rockfall-prone areas. The wild spring is free, but the guide says not to swim in the river. Pack out all trash. Overnight camping on the Baiyangbei riverside is described as damp and not recommended.
